Sunday, May 13th was my first Mother's day! You never know just how you appreciate your own mother until you have kids and become one yourself. What a job huh! Whew! It makes me tired just thinking about it. The sleepless nights, the endless time spent changing, feeding, playing, rocking, etc. Not to mention the forever money pit that is created once you give birth!
But overall, it's been the biggest blessing I've ever experienced! Life would just not be the same without her! She's the joy of my life and the best thing that has ever happened.
Of course I must give credit to my stay-at-home daddy hubby! The hardest working dad I've ever seen! He's great with her and has his own system that even I can't top! As a mother of course I've had many doubts and he's definitely proved me wrong. Even with the new cloth diapering system which was a very hard task to get him started. At the end of the day he will always be guy but at least he's good with her. That's what matters the most!
I also must give even more credit to my own mother! I wouldn't even know where to begin if I did not have the teachings and values instilled in me by her. She was the best mother and still is. As a stay at home mother, she spent the first half of my life with my sister and I everyday!
Now that I am a working mother I envy that bond and want the same for my daugher. It's funny because now that school is almost over for me, I am thinking of just how can I become a stay at home mother! Something that doesn't take a college education, but heart and spirit which is much more fulfilling than any corporate job. At the moment I am not able to venture into the SAHM (Stay at home Mom) world, but I'm hoping it's in my cards for the future.
Oddly enough, I just had my 28th birthday yesterday which was the day after mother's day. Isn't it ironic how my birthday always falls during the same time as Mother's day. My mother and I fight about who's day it is when happens to be the same day. It's funny because without me she wouldn't be a mom, but without her, I would have a birthday! So, I guess in this case the chicken comes before the egg!

Cloth Diapers
From an article in the New York Time Out Kids magazine sparked a great movement in me. The article was about new yorkers and trying to be green with kids. Talking about the different ways to save the world while trying to take care of children. It's hard I tell you! The baggies, the cans, bottles, diapers, wipes, etc. etc. So, I'm not going to tell you that I am 100% green but I am definitely making strides to at least trying to make a difference.
I recently started with Cloth Diapering my baby girl. It's been a long month of research night after night on the internet. I read a lot of different WAHM websites on what the costs/benefits are to diapering. I finally made the decision to go with a diaper service for now unless I either gain more patience for more laundering trips or move into an apartment with a washer/dryer.
The experience for cloth diapering is one in it's own. There's a whole world out there I didn't even know about. All lingo and choices like AIO, fitted, prefolds, covers, no covers. The cost involved are great in the beginning just like any investment. However depending on how you weigh it out you could be saving a lot in the long run. With a diaper service however, I don't know exactly just how much I'm saving except for that she'll potty train faster supposedly. But, anyhow, I'm saving our landfills. Each diaper takes 500 years to decompose! Can you believe that? It's crazy! So, even just one cloth diaper baby helps if you think about all the diapers you'll throw out in a year!
We also started using cloth wipes as well. Now those, I just bought a lot of and will wash them when I do my own laundry. So, that definitely saves money on wipes and they are nice and soft for babies bottom. I make my own solution which is sort of fun to do!
The whole process has been a very enlightening experience for me and I'm definitely a fan now.
I have to note that since our baby has started on a little bit of solids this week, she did her first Poo poo today! My husband send me a text message with a picture of it and I was excited for her! I know, I know, the things that parents do. Silly huh! It's the simple things in life!

Long Overdue
So, I finally have come around to starting a blog for life with our beautiful baby girl! Mikayla Yasmeen was born November 4th, 2006 so she is officially 6 months today (May 4th)! I can't get over how time has flown by! Amazing how time flys. Everyday I kept telling myself to start this blog and never did I until now. My husband and I have been married since October 2005. Surviving our first 6 months of newborn-hood has really put our marriage to the test. We've almost killed each other but thankfully we made it through the first 6 months.
Through these 6 months our family has been quite busy. I finished up my Fall semester that I had to miss quite a few weeks from at NYU. We flew to my home (bay area, CA) for Xmas and so that was an experience to travel with a six-week old. I then started back the Spring semester and now I'm finished this week with my graduation ceremony finally on Monday, May 7th! After a very long haul, I'm finally graduating, and from NYU! I still have another class in the summer and then I'm really really done. We had the baby baptized on March 18th at the St. Barnabus Church in the Bronx near us which was very nice. Lauren, a good friend of mine, is the god-mother. Juan Salazar, the husband of my best-friend back home, is the god-father.
I started back to work after maternity leave (which is the hardes thing for a mother to do). Hubby is the stay-at-home-daddy for now until mommy feels Mikayla is ready to be with caretakers (and also when I can afford good care). We had to fly back to CA a few weeks ago for an emergency trip to see my father whom was hospitalized. He had to have an emergency brain surgery and now he's in Rehab. So, that is a whole other topic but it's quite heart breaking and a very tough situation. The baby was alright during this trip although it threw her schedule completely off!
The changes in our life come and go but the ones in our little girl are so exciting to watch. I cherish the moments when I see her really trying to do something new. She reaches for things (especially those things she knows she can't have), she laughs a lot more and also gets quite bratty with an attitude! It's hilarious to see a child so young take on such a strong personality. I already know were going to have problems. She's teething already and sucking on anything she can get her fingers on. She is a terror at night and very tough to put to sleep. We're working on that one. She is barely starting her first solids (although not taking much in yet). I just recently in the last week started her on Cloth Diapers. I felt that it would be a contribution to our decaying earth and plus it's just plain fun! But really it does feel good that I'm not contributing to the billions of diapers per year that take 500 years to decompose. I am using a service for now but hoping at some point will be confident enough to do them myself one day.
Anyhow, I wanted to start our blog so that I could share all the wonderful stories, photos, and videos with my family and friends of our beautiful princess!
